Durante los primeros meses de la pandemia por COVID-19, al menos 7.291 personas mayores murieron en residencias de la Comunidad de Madrid sin ser derivadas a hospitales. Esta cifra, concreta y brutal, es el punto de partida de 7.291, una instalación concebida como un gesto de duelo, memoria y denuncia.

La pieza se presenta como una cortina de cadenas de aluminio anodizado negro, cada una impresa en blanco con la cifra que da título a la obra. Al atravesarla, el cuerpo del espectador pone en marcha un mecanismo inevitable: el desgaste de las cifras, la progresiva desaparición del dato. Lo que se ofrece aquí no es solo una experiencia visual, sino corporal: para ver la obra es necesario entrar en ella, y al hacerlo, inevitablemente, se participa en el borrado.

Lejos de lo testimonial o lo conmemorativo al uso, 7.291 apela a la responsabilidad de quien mira y atraviesa. Se pregunta, en presente, por los mecanismos del olvido social, por la fragilidad de la memoria pública, por las políticas que definen lo que se recuerda y lo que se silencia. En palabras del propio artista, “la obra no va contra nadie, pero tampoco deja a nadie fuera”.

En su instalación la pieza ocupaba un lugar de paso obligado. No esta aislada, sino integrada en el flujo del cuerpo social que constituye el espacio donde se exhibe. Su potencia radica en esa tensión: ¿podemos seguir caminando como si nada?

7.291 no busca clausurar el hecho que evoca, sino reabrirlo, insistir en él, hacer que nos roce. En ese roce —leve, mecánico, ineludible— se activa el verdadero centro de la obra: una interpelación silenciosa, una pregunta que persiste.

During the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, at least 7.291 elderly people died in nursing homes in the Community of Madrid without ever being transferred to hospitals. This specific and brutal figure is the starting point for 7.291, an installation conceived as an act of mourning, remembrance, and denunciation.

The piece takes the form of a curtain made of black anodized aluminum chains, each printed in white with the number that gives the work its title. As viewers pass through it, the viewer’s body sets in motion an inevitable mechanism: the erosion of the numbers, the gradual disappearance of the data. What is offered here is not only a visual experience, but also a physical one: to see the work, it is necessary to enter it, and in doing so, one inevitably participates in its erasure.

Far from being merely testimonial or conventionally commemorative, 7.291 appeals to the responsibility of those who look at and walk through it. It interrogates the mechanisms of social oblivion, the fragility of collective memory, and the policies that define what is remembered and what is silenced. In the artist’s own words, “the work is not against anyone, but it does not leave anyone out either.”

In its installation, the piece occupied a place of obligatory passage. It is not isolated, but woven into the flow of the social body that constitutes the space where it is exhibited. Its force lies in that tension: can we keep walking as if nothing had happened?
